Mr S.Gunasekaran, a CPI MLA and also the deputy leader of CPI in the Assembly, started his speech highlighting the attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka military in the Palk Bay.

In the debate over the Governor’s address in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly on 1 February 2012, CPI MLA S.Gunasekaran said “CPI party completely supports the state government’s stand to safeguard the traditional fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Strait and to assure their safety of fishermen; to press the Central government’s action to retrieve Katchatheevu”. The attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy and Sinhalese fishermen continues even today. Whenever an attack takes place on the fishermen, every Tamil feels humiliated. This has to be stopped once and for all, and the TN Assembly should insist on its participation in the talks between New Delhi and Colombo, Mr. Gunasekaran said.

CPI MLA GunasekaranFurther the MLA noted "News media reported that there were talks between Indian Foreign Minister and the Sri Lankan government about the fishing rights in Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar. The state government should report the state assembly whether it knows about it. The Tamil Nadu fishermen have already affected when Katchatheevu island. Tamil Nadu government officials and major Tamil political party leaders should be allowed to participate in the panel of negotiation with Sri Lanka for the fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen. Tamil Nadu State Assembly should pass a resolution demanding its participation."

Tamil Nadu State Assembly should press New Delhi to make arrangements for its participation in the UN Human Rights Council sessions led by its High Commissioner Navineetham Pillay in Geneva on 27 March 2012 to present the case of war crimes against Eezham Tamils, said MLA  S. Gunasekaran. More than 50 countries have acknowledged in first phase that the SL has committed war crimes. The State assembly should pass a resolution demanding the Centre to expose the SL war crimes. He reminded the Assembly on its earlier resolution on this issue and said that a case should be filed in the International Court of Justice against Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for the genocide committed on Eezham Tamils. Deprivation of political, homeland and language rights of Eezham Tamils continues in the island and they are treated like slaves without security. Sri Lanka has not even spent the Indian monetary assistance of Rs 1500 crores meant for Eezham Tamils sufficiently, the MLA said.
